Someone is waiting

A phone call you type.

Every keystroke appears live on the other screen. No send button. No saved conversations.

What is The Line

Two people. One live line.

The Line is a one-to-one, real-time text app. You don't send messages. You open a line to one person, and as you type, they watch your words appear. As they answer, you watch theirs.

It works like a phone call, except you type instead of talk.

  1. 01RING

Look someone up. Their phone rings.

  2. 02ANSWER

They pick up, and the line is live.

  3. 03TYPE

You both type at once. Every keystroke arrives as it happens.

  4. 04HANG UP

End the line, or let it close after 60 seconds with nobody typing.

Experience live typing

Watch a line.

Two phones, one line. Watch each letter land on the other screen as it's typed.

A simulated line between Maya and an anonymous user, @line7k2wq. Maya rings; the other phone shows Answer and Decline; they answer and both screens show LIVE. Each person's typing appears on the other screen letter by letter, mistakes and corrections included:

  1. Maya: are you there?
  2. @line7k2wq: right here
  3. Maya: wait, you see every letter?
  4. @line7k2wq: every one. even the typos
  5. Maya: so no send button?
  6. @line7k2wq: none. it's like a call
  7. Maya: a call you type

The text fades from both screens after 30 seconds. After 60 seconds with nobody typing, the line closes.

A simulation of the app's live screen, running entirely in your browser. Nothing here is sent anywhere, and nobody is on the other end.

No send button

No send button. No waiting for a message. Just the conversation, as it happens.

Typing is the conversation. The other person sees you pause, correct yourself and start again, the way they'd hear you on a call.

Conversations without history

When the line ends, the conversation doesn't become a chat history.

What you type fades from the screen after 30 seconds. When the line closes, the conversation text is deleted from our servers. There's no inbox, no archive and nothing to scroll back through.

That cuts both ways. Nobody can read it back later, including you. If you need a record of something, The Line is the wrong place for it.

The service still keeps what it needs to run, such as your account, your settings and who you've blocked. The privacy policy lists exactly what, and for how long.

Connect your way

Start with no name. Keep one if you want.

Fastest

Continue anonymously

No phone number, no email, no password. You get a temporary handle like @line7k2wq and can be reached at it right away.

It's temporary. Delete the app or choose start fresh and it's gone for good. Leave the app closed for a long time and it can be released to someone else.

Permanent

Sign in with phone

Register a number to make your identity yours. It stops being disposable, people who already have your number can find you, and you can pick a @username and add a recovery email.

Started anonymously? Add a number later and keep the handle you already have.

Find someone

One field. Type any of these and tap the result to ring them.

  • @usernameA chosen username, or a temporary handle typed in full.
  • Contact nameOnly with your permission. Numbers are scrambled on your phone before anything is checked.
  • Phone numberTyped in full. Works without sharing your contacts.
  • Pairing codeFor someone right next to you. Read it out; it lasts five minutes.

Recent people

An empty search shows the people this phone has been on a line with. The list lives on your device, holds no conversation content, and can be cleared in Settings.

It's a quick way to ring someone again. It won't bring back what you said.

Not here yet?

Type their full number. If they aren't on The Line, you can send them an invitation with a link to get the app.

Privacy and control

Yours to start. Yours to end.

  • No chat history

Conversation text isn't kept once the line closes. A report never contains what anyone typed, because there's no transcript to attach.

  • Anonymous entry

Use The Line without a phone number. Nobody can browse a directory of users. People find you by a name, number or code they already have.

  • Report and block

Report from an incoming line, a live line, or anyone you've looked up, and a person reviews it. A blocked account can't ring you.

  • Delete your account

Account → delete account, inside the app. Your directory record, handle, phone registration and push tokens are removed from our servers.

Text is encrypted on the way and while it passes through, but it isn't end-to-end encrypted. Treat The Line like a text message, not a vault for secrets.
