Delete your The Line account
The Line provides permanent account deletion and data erasure. You can delete your account directly from within the app at any time, or submit an external deletion request by email if you no longer have access to the app.
1. Delete within the app (Instant)
If you have The Line installed on your device, in-app deletion is immediate, server-authoritative, and requires no waiting:
- Open The Line on your phone.
- On the main terminal screen, tap the Account button (⚙ gear icon).
- Scroll to the bottom of the sheet and tap delete account.
-
A confirmation prompt will appear titled DELETE ACCOUNT with the message:
“This permanently removes your directory entry, phone-number registration, and push tokens. Anyone who has you saved as a contact will see your number go dark. This cannot be undone.”
Tap Delete to confirm.
When you confirm, the authoritative server deletion job executes immediately. Your account, credentials, directory mappings, phone index, and device tokens are wiped from our servers, and you are signed out instantly.
2. Request deletion without the app
If you uninstalled The Line, lost your device, or cannot access the app, you can submit an external account deletion request.
Send an email to our support contact with the details below:

Subject: The Line — Account Deletion Request
To locate your account, please provide only the minimum necessary identifying details:
- Your registered phone number (in international E.164 format, e.g.,
+1234567890). - Your registered The Line username / handle (e.g.,
@username), if one was chosen.
To protect account holders against unauthorized erasure, identity verification (such as confirming ownership via an automated SMS verification challenge) may be required before processing an external deletion request.
3. What data is deleted
When your account deletion is processed (either via the in-app action or upon verified email request), the following account-associated data is permanently removed:
- Authentication Account: Your Firebase Authentication user profile, credentials, and user ID are deleted permanently.
- Phone Number Registration & Index: The private normalized record of your phone number, along with the one-way cryptographic hash (SHA-256) used for contact discovery, are deleted. Contacts who have your number in their address books will no longer be able to discover or call your account.
- Username / Handle: Your claimed username reservation is released and unlinked from your user ID.
- Directory & Profile Metadata: Your display name, account endpoints, and profile listings are removed from the directory.
- Push Notification Tokens: Device notification tokens (Apple APNs / Google FCM) registered to ring your phone are deleted.
- Contact Grants & Connection Requests: Active phone lookup requests, authorizations, and pending grants are removed.
- Block List & Settings: Your personal block list and account preferences (such as line muting toggles) are purged.
4. Live conversation text (Ephemeral)
The Line is designed from the ground up for synchronous, real-time communication:
- No Stored Message History: Conversation text exists transiently only while a line is actively open between participants.
- Automatic Deletion on Close: As soon as the line ends or the session closes, conversation text is purged. The Line does not maintain an inbox, message archive, or past conversation history.
- Server Cleanup: A scheduled server sweeper removes transient session records and debris after call completion.
5. Data retention policy
We practice strict data minimization and do not retain personal data beyond its operational necessity:
- Personal Account Data: Retained only while your account is active. When you delete your account, account data is erased immediately from production databases. We do not retain deleted personal account data for 30, 60, or 90 days.
- Temporary Pairing Codes: When generated, one-way pairing codes expire automatically after 5 minutes and are permanently discarded.
- Abuse Prevention & Rate Counters: Temporary lookup rate counters expire automatically on short rolling windows (e.g. 1 minute) and do not contain query search content.
6. Anonymous users (Start Fresh)
The Line supports optional anonymous use with temporary system handles without requiring a phone number or email address.
Anonymous identities do not have a permanent registered phone account. If you are using The Line anonymously, you can retire your temporary identity at any time directly in the app:
Open Account (⚙) → tap start fresh (new handle) or Sign out.
This immediately retires your current anonymous handle, releases the name, clears local recents and block lists, and assigns a brand-new identity upon next launch.
